There is a recurring line in the movie, âButch Cassidy & The Sundance Kidâ that has always tickled me.
Butch and Sundance are trying to evade capture, and as usual, they are fleeing on horseback toward âThe Hole In The Wall,â a secret passage through the cliffs in the wild west.
But thereâs something different about these pursuers: theyâre relentless.
Nothing is stopping them or even slowing them down. Periodically, Butch and Sundance look at each other and ask, first with curiosity, then with respect, finally with genuine fear: âWho ARE those guys?â
To me, that question is one of the greatest compliments you can receive, especially from competitors.
When they go from mere curiosity to genuine fear about your capabilities, youâll know that youâre heading in the right direction.
Here are some things you can say and do to become relentless and awe-inspiring:
(1) Tell yourself, âI will not stop, hesitate, or be distracted from pursuing my goals.â
(2) Keep your eyes on the prize. Identify, quantify, and materialize your goals. Keep them in front of you at all times in pictures, numbers, and symbols.
(3) Donât worry about your competitors; let them worry about YOU!
(4) Realize, âInch by inch, itâs a cinch; yard by yard, itâs hard.â Keep making incremental gains and soon enough, youâll outdistance everyone.
(5) Appreciate that when youâre feeling that youâre standing still, making no progress whatsoever, youâre still moving forward. You just canât see it, yet.
At the base of this is the idea that Iâve developed in a popular audio program, âThe Law of Large Numbers: How To Make Success Inevitable,â published by Nightingale-Conant.
If you do enough of anything, youâll succeed.
Do more than that, and youâll grow rich.
Do yet more, and youâll grow famous, like âThe Hole In The Wall Gang.â
